Tuition-Free Summer Courses

In 2020, we announced that certain undergraduate students who were enrolled in fall 2020 were eligible to take free summer course(s) during summer 2021 or summer 2022. If you are eligible and did not take your free summer course(s) during summer 2021, you may be eligible to take free courses this summer.

Undergraduate students who were enrolled full-time in fall 2020 (12 or more credits) are eligible for two free courses (up to six credits).

Undergraduate students who were enrolled part-time in fall 2020 (six to eleven credits) are eligible for one free course (up to three credits).

Students who did not attend fall 2020 or who were enrolled in fewer than six credits are not eligible to receive this benefit. Students who receive full-tuition scholarships are not eligible for this benefit.

Here are more details about your free course(s):

  • The credit will automatically be applied to the highest value course(s); that is, three-credit courses will be credited before two-credit courses.
  • The courses should apply to your program requirements.
  • If you did not enroll in the summer 2021 semester, you may use your free courses in summer 2022 (if you graduated already, see below for eligibility). All free courses must be taken during one semester and cannot be split over the two summers.
  • Your credit may be applied towards tuition for your registered courses only and is not applicable to the comprehensive fee or other charges, nor is it eligible to be refunded.

Students Who Have Graduated

If you graduated in fall 2020 or spring 2021:

You were eligible to use your tuition-free credits for summer 2021 only, and are not eligible for free summer courses during summer 2022.

If you graduated (or intend to graduate) in summer 2021, fall 2021, or spring 2022:

If you were enrolled part-time or full-time in fall 2020, meet the criteria outlined above for eligibility, and did not use your free summer courses during summer 2021, you are eligible to use them during summer 2022.

You may use the credits for any courses except private instruction.

How to Enroll in Your Tuition-Free Courses if You Are Eligible

Register for summer courses through the standard registration process. Once you are registered, the Office of Student Accounts will place the appropriate credit on your account automatically, which will deduct from your overall tuition charges. Learn more about what you will see on your billing statement.

The credit will automatically be applied to the highest value course(s); that is, three-credit courses will be credited before two-credit courses (view a grid that shows the value of the credits for different course combinations).

If you were enrolled in the summer 2021 semester, you were required to use your tuition-free courses that semester and cannot use them in summer 2022.

If you are the recipient of a scholarship or Berklee grant, your award will be adjusted based on the number of credits for which you are billed. For example: if you register for 15 credits and receive six credits for free, the scholarship will be prorated based on the nine credits that are being charged. You can estimate your summer scholarship using this calculator (login required).
