Professors Joseph Coroniti and Peter Gardner of the General Education Department organized the Sixth Annual General Education Symposium, Teaching Through Writing, in April. The symposium featured speakers from Harvard University and Wellesley and Bentley colleges, addressing college faculty and staff from across New England. Coroniti was also invited to give lectures, seminars, and faculty development workshops in China. He was in Beijing and Dalian to work with students and faculty at two universities.

Professional Education Division Dean Larry McClellan released his debut CD Movin' Up. The disc features five of his original pieces, standards, and other material. Musicians include McClellan on trombone, pianist Ron Blake, saxophonist Donald Brown, bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Adonis Rose, and percussionist Pernell Saturnino. The CD was recorded by Professor of Music Production & Engineering Carl Beatty and produced by Assistant Vice President of Special Programs Rob Rose.

Professor of Piano Bob Winter released the double CD A Winter Warmer, a collection of solo piano pieces recorded in February 1999.

Percussion Department Chair Dean Anderson will be touring with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra this summer.

Associate Professor of Music Business/ Management Peter Alhadeff published an article about internet usage by Latin artists in the February issue of Grammy Latino magazine. It also appeared in the program of this year's Grammy Awards. In March, Alhadeff was a guest on the WGBH-TV2 program "Boston Common" discussing illegal trading of MP3s.

Jazz Composition Professor and guitarist Jeff Friedman will play on the Eric Mingus European tour beginning in June.

Bassist and Associate Professor Bruno Räberg released Presence, his third album. It features Associate Professor Marcello Pellitteri on drums and Ole Mathisen on saxophone. Räberg recently performed in Sweden, Norway, and South Africa, and recorded with the Lars-Erik Norrstrom Trio and with Woodwind Associate Professor George Garzone and Swedish guitarist Jonny Johansson.

Associate Professor of Jazz Composition Scott Free was awarded a 1999-2000 ASCAP Composition Award.

Professor of Contemporary Writing and Production Robert Doezema has been directing the Berklee City Music Saturday and after-school program for Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville high school students.

Flute Professor Wendy Rolfe was in Brazil in March to do master classes, concerts, and research. Last year, she made period instrument recordings of J. S. Bach's Mass in B Minor and Gluck's Iphigenie en Tauride with Boston Baroque, and Mozart's orchestration of Handel's Messiah with the Handel and Haydn Society. Her Ensemble Duemila, formed with keyboardist Christa Rakich, is currently producing two recordings.

Professor of Contemporary Writing and Production Ben Elkins and his student ensemble, the Back Bay Brass Jazz Orchestra, were featured artists at the Townwide Jazz Festival 2000 in Simsbury, Connecticut, in April. The group's repertoire includes music of Maria Schneider, Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Bob Florence, Jim McNeeley, and Elkins.

Associate Professor of Bass Oscar Stagnaro's The Latin Bass Book: A Practical Guide, is slated for fall release by Sher Music. He is also included on the Afro-Cuban play-along CD and book Muy Caliente! Stagnaro recently performed with Paquito D' Rivera at the Smithsonian Institute and appears on the CD Paquito D'Rivera Live at the Blue Note.

Assistant Professor of Voice Adriana Balic recorded vocals and keyboards on her debut CD For You. Balic produced the album with Voice Department Instructor Jude Crossen, who sang background vocals, Guitar Department Instructor Bobby Rodgers, and bassist Chris Loftlin. In May, Balic's band performed at the Hatch Shell for the Annual Walk to Benefit Deaf and Hard of Hearing People.

Professor of Guitar Charles Chapman wrote a book entitled Drop-2 Concept for Guitar. Chapman also wrote the liner notes for the Thumbs Up CD by bassist Carol Kaye.

Associate Professor of Percussion Dave Samuels released New Horizons, the latest CD from his band Caribbean Jazz Project.

Assistant Professor of Ear Training Mark Shilansky played piano and did arrangements for vocalist Robin McElhatten '99 on her debut CD Never Let Me Go By.

General Education Department Instructor Michelle Martello wrote an article about teaching English at Berklee for Case Western Reserve University's magazine.

Percussion Instructor David Cowan is playing this summer with the Boston Pops Gospel Choir and the Esplanade Orchestra. He also played on the CD Somebody Wants You by vocalist Jude Crossen.

Assistant Professor of Guitar Tomo Fujita, Assistant Professor of Piano Dave Limina, Associate Professor of Drums Larry Finn, and Associate Professor of Bass Anthony Vitti released instructional videos on their respective instruments for the Rittor Music Video Workshop series. Finn has also released a CD called The Dig.

Professor of Contemporary Writing and Production Michael Farquharson completed The Writers Production Handbook for Berklee Press.(Opens in a new window) He engineered and mixed the Eric Mingus album Er Um Um, and has coproduced and/or engineered CDs for many Berklee faculty members.
