Faculty Member to Set Up Recording Studio in the Dominican Republic

Chrissy Tignor, assistant professor in Berklee's Contemporary Writing and Production Department, has started a series of recording workshops at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. From August 8 to 15 she will help set up the conservatory’s first recording studio in preparation for the fall semester. Tignor will conduct a recording workshop for students on Tuesday, August 14.

Tignor first traveled to the conservatory with Berklee to audition students for the Michel Camilo Scholarship competition last November. “I was asked to present some workshops on music production, and I realized they didn’t have any equipment at all for recording,” she said. “The interest from the students was undeniable, so I was inspired to find a way to help build a studio there.”

When she returned to Boston, she sent them her old iMac to get started and began compiling more equipment to bring with her to donate to the conservatory. Tignor gathered enough gear to facilitate a workshop on multitrack recording in March, the first time this type of equipment had been made available to the musicians.

“Students came in with all of their instruments and ensembles, and we recorded everything that came through the door! Now, they have all of the equipment to build a program,” said Tignor. She plans to run additional workshops in the future, focusing on live sound to reinforce and capture performances at the conservatory.

Tignor is a producer, recording engineer, songwriter, and musician who has worked with companies and artists such as Bastille, Alex Clare, Gary Go, Good Old War, Spotify, Julien Baker, and Notting Hill Music.
