Miley Cyrus Ensemble to Celebrate Pop Diva’s Career
Berklee's spring Signature Series continues with Miley Cyrus Ensemble: Untamed, a two-day concert event showcasing the evolutionary arc of the pop superstar’s career, on Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15, at 8:00 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center. Under the direction of faculty members Tia Fuller (director) and Mimi Jones (assistant director), the ensemble will present a genre-spanning program with styles ranging from country and ’80s rock to psychedelic pop.
“Preparing this show has allowed students to further etch into their greatness and excellence by refining the essential principles: humility, wisdom, forgiveness, nurturing, and spirituality,” said Fuller, a Grammy-nominated artist who's toured with Beyoncé and played saxophone in Pixar's Soul for the character of Dorothea Willams. "Miley Cyrus’s music is allowing for the ensemble to dig deeper into themselves, as performers, producers, musicians, and dancers.”
The Miley Cyrus Ensemble was created when Felipe Siquara, a student who now serves as the group's creative director, brought the idea to Fuller. With the help of creative codirector Timmy Demott and performance coach Kirsten Henry, the ensemble has evolved into a tight-knit community reflecting Cyrus's spirit of acceptance, individuality, and creativity. The theme of “embracing the unconventional" is a central to the Untamed production, as students have channeled their individuality into a diverse selection of songs and arrangements.
“Miley Cyrus is an artist that has experimented in just about every genre, and all of these different phases and reinventions still inherently make up the artist that Miley Cyrus is. She always finds her way back home,” said Siquara, a professional music major in his last semester. “This message is critical to the essence of the show.... One of our focuses as a group is harboring a safe space for those who feel like they typically don’t have a ‘place on the stage,’ specifically uplifting LGBTQ+ artists at Berklee and around the world.”
Other key contributors to Untamed include Demi Brown and Hope Divine, choreographers; Malachi Lewis, musical director; Tyler Christian and Nico Cardoso, vocal arrangers; Ryan Tharayil, horn arranger; and Lili Chey-Warren, co-executive producer and head of wardrobe. In total, more than 80 students and faculty contributed their talents to the production.
The Berklee Performance Center is located at 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. Admission is $15/20 in advance, $20/25 on the day of the show, and $10 in advance, $5-25 day-of with a Berklee ID. Tickets are available online and at the Berklee Performance Center box office. This is a seated event.
