Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith B.M. ’08 has been releasing music composed with synthesizers since the early 2010s, and has earned high praise from music outlets including Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and the A.V. Club. She’s also scored films, remixed work by artists such as Max Richter and Perfume Genius, and released a collaborative album with synth pioneer and Berklee visiting scholar Suzanne Ciani. She was also highlighted as one of five Berklee women pushing the limits of electronic performance. Smith's new label, Touchtheplants, which she cofounded with her husband, has released two solo works from her Electronic Series: 2018’s Abstractions and 2019's Tides: Music for Meditation and Yoga.
As a professional music major at Berklee, Smith focused on sound engineering, film scoring, composition, and orchestration. She joined us remotely for this episode of Sounds of Berklee, and explained how after graduating in 2008, it took a few more years before she found, almost by accident, the instrument that would shape her sound for the rest of the decade.
