Boston Conservatory Center Stage Presents Romantic Musical Comedy She Loves Me
Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s second Center Stage production of the fall season will be She Loves Me, one of musical theater’s most charming romantic comedies. Performed by Boston Conservatory musical theater students, shows will take place at Boston Conservatory Theater from Thursday, November 5 through Sunday, November 8. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on November 5 through November 7, and 1 p.m. on November 7 and November 8.
Set in a 1930s European perfumery, She Loves Me is a romantic musical comedy about two feuding shop clerks who are unaware that they are secretly falling in love as anonymous pen pals. With a soaring score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, best known for their work on Fiddler on the Roof, this intimate and witty show captures the magic of connection, the vulnerability of love, and the joy of discovering love in an unexpected place. Featuring lush, witty songwriting—including favorites such as “Vanilla Ice Cream,” “Tonight at Eight,” and “She Loves Me”—this beloved musical is based on the play Parfumerie by Miklós László. The Conservatory’s production will be directed by professor Danny Pelzig, with music direction by staff accompanist Dan Rodriguez.
With its vividly drawn ensemble of shop employees, and its blend of sparkling comedy and heartfelt romance, She Loves Me has been enchanting audiences for generations. It was first made into the movie The Shop Around the Corner, starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. The musical’s concept was later adapted into the Judy Garland film In the Good Old Summertime, which inspired the modern-day Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan film You’ve Got Mail.
“It’s a joy to bring She Loves Me to Boston Conservatory Theater, performed by our talented musical theater students,” said Pelzig. “This production has entertained audiences from the moment it premiered on Broadway in 1963. Joe Masteroff’s book, in addition to Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s iconic score, have withstood the test of time, being adapted and modernized several times as iconic romantic comedies throughout the years. I know audiences will be thrilled with how our students honor this legendary musical.”
She Loves Me will take place at Boston Conservatory Theater, located at 31 Hemenway Street in Boston, Massachusetts, at 7:30 p.m. from Thursday, November 5 through Saturday, November 7, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8. Tickets are $43.50 to $48.50 for regular seating and $33.50 to $38.50 for seniors, non-Berklee students, and Boston Conservatory alumni.
