Join us to hear the latest updates and check out the final ventures from the Summer Lab of the Open Music Initiative (OMI). The 19 Summer Lab fellows, including six Berklee students, have worked in four teams to explore the edges of derivative musical works by utilizing distributed ledgers and OMI’s new API.

Meet the Teams:

  • Fiber: A VR exploration of the facets of a song. Think Song Exploder combined with Inception. You’ll walk into the song and the world it has created. They are expanding the recommended categories of the API by including information beyond attribution and metadata.
  • LÜM: An active and passive data collection system for club DJs. Their interactive demo captures an audience's dancing and gestures (phone accelerometer) to inform and change a live DJ mix and/or capture response. This is a great example of how the API can be used in combination with other data to create new meaning: in this case, identifying fan interest.
  • EchoWe: A sample marketplace that allows for content creators to clear copyright issues with their inspired or derivative works through pre-clearing tracks. By using blockchain’s provenance and monetary distribution, they hope to create multileveled attribution that allows for people to easily capture and create complex licensing contracts.
  • DeepDive: A community-focused platform that helps uncover an artist or musician’s moments and the influences that stem from them. They also are writing API Specs as an add-on to the OMI API because they are going beyond attribution to “influence” and narrative.
