Passport and Visa Information
Passport Requirement
All students must have a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond their study abroad semester end date. It is recommended that you have your passport ready at least four months before your program start date. Please contact Berklee Study Abroad if you have questions about how to apply for a passport.
Visa Requirement
Most students will need to obtain a student visa (visado de estudios) to study abroad in Spain.* This includes all students who are citizens of the United States, Great Britain, and any other nations outside the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA). In Spain, a student visa is a subcategory of "National Visa." The visa is a long-term permit that you apply for at a Spanish consulate granting you permission to live as a student in Spain. The visa gets stamped inside your passport. It is recommended that you start reviewing the visa instructions as soon as you are admitted to your study abroad program so that you have enough time to prepare your visa application.
All students must obtain their student visa before arriving in Spain. It will not be possible to travel to Spain as a tourist and get the visa there. Even if you might not need a visa to go on vacation in Spain for a shorter period of time, most students will be required to have a student visa in order to study abroad in Spain for the upcoming semester or academic year.
*Students who hold a valid passport from a country in the European Union or the European Economic Area do not need a visa to study in Spain. The EEA encompasses all EU member countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
When to Apply for a Visa
Spanish regulations now require that visa applications be submitted to the appropriate consulate or application center at least two months before the start date of your study abroad program. This means that students who will begin their study abroad in a Fall semester must submit the visa application by late June, while students who will begin their study abroad in a Spring semester must submit their visa application by late November. Be aware that you will likely need to reserve a visa application submission appointment, and those appointments often book up several weeks in advance.
Once you submit your visa application to the appropriate location (described below), it usually takes around 4–6 weeks for the application to be processed and approved. Your actual passport will be submitted with your complete visa application materials. This means that you will be without your passport while your visa application is being processed. If you are concerned about how the visa application timeline might conflict with any personal international travels you have planned, please contact Berklee Study Abroad so that we can offer the best advice related to your situation.
Where to Apply for a Visa
You will need to apply for your Spanish student visa through a Spanish consulate or official visa application center which holds consular jurisdiction over the place where your home address is located, or over the place where you attend school. Some students might have two options for where they can submit their application, namely if they go to school in one region but have a primary home located in another region. Proof of residency within the respective consular jurisdiction will be required, so it will not be possible to choose just anywhere to submit your application. Regardless of where the application is made, the general requirements are described below. After thoroughly reading through the information on this website, students should also carefully read the websites of the Spanish consulate or visa application center where the application will be submitted.
In the United States, and in various other countries around the world, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contracted a third-party visa processing agency called BLS International for the issuance of student visas. Many students will ultimately submit their visa applications to a BLS office holding consular jurisdiction over the place where they live or where they attend school.
Option 1: Apply for Your Visa in Boston
The following students may apply for their Spanish student visas through the BLS Visa Application Center in Boston.
Any student currently attending in-person studies at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee. As proof of residency, Berklee Study Abroad will provide you with a notarized enrollment verification letter confirming that you attend school in Massachusetts.
Any student attending another college or university located in Massachusetts or in the neighboring New England states of Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont. As proof of residency, you will need to communicate with the study abroad office at your home institution to obtain a notarized enrollment verification letter from your school which confirms the location where you live at school.
Any student whose primary home address is located in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont. You will need to get a notarized photocopy of your driver's license or state ID card proving your residency in this region.
If you do not fall into any of the three categories listed above, please refer to the section below titled Option 2: Apply for your Visa in Another Region.
If you fall into any of the categories above, but you also have a school address or home address located in another region, you may have the alternative option to apply for your visa in that region. You could choose to apply in Boston or apply in the other location, whichever makes sense for your plans. See the Option 2 section below for further guidance.
Option 2: Apply for Your Visa in Another Region
The steps below describe the general process for obtaining a student visa through an application in another region. Remember that you must apply for your Spanish visa through a Spanish consulate or official visa application center holding consular jurisdiction over the region where you live or where you attend school. It is not possible to apply for your Spanish visa anywhere else. You will need to show documentation proving your place of residency.
You must check with your Spanish consulate or visa application center to find out their requirements and timeline for applying for a visa. Spanish consular offices normally require that you submit your complete visa application for review at least two months before you will travel to Spain, and it may take approximately 4-6 weeks for your visa application to be processed after you submit it. It will be necessary to have compiled your complete application materials in advance of that application submission.
