World Music Scoring Association
The idea for the World Music Scoring Association, founded in 2023, was first piloted by the assistant chair of the Screen Scoring Department. Students interested in world music composition were recruited and this club was formed to provide Berklee students a chance to learn about composing for world music styles and instruments.
The WMSA will create opportunities for student composers to learn how to write global music in an authentic way and apply it to media scoring as well as original compositions. This is also a platform to showcase the knowledge that they have acquired through the club. Meetings are every Wednesday, 1:00p.m.–2:00 p.m. in 150 Mass Ave Rm 185. Everyone is welcome!
Mission and Vision
WMSA's purpose is to create an opportunity for student composers to learn how to write global music in an authentic way and apply it to media such as films, TV series, games, AR/VR, and interactive media, as well as original compositions. Students will have the chance to learn about the music industries of these cultures and give them a platform to showcase the knowledge that they have acquired through the club.
Core values include inclusivity, sharing, curiosity, and growth, and to help broaden each other's musical horizons. The club's goals will be achieved not only enthusiastically, but with the underlying spirit of community and educating each other along the way. Every member will not only learn valuable skills to apply to their music and career, but additionally will feel like part of a bigger community which will support them in their endeavors. The members' impact will hopefully ripple through the Berklee community can bear fruit to these endeavors, gaining access to events where this newfound knowledge will be presented, and possibly learning more about global music in the process.
