BerKalit

Founded at Berklee in 2022
In Hebrew, Kalit (קליט) means “catchy” like a song, making our name, “BerKalit,” a musical, Hebrew, and Berklee pun!
We are a new mixed a cappella group that sings Jewish music, made of members from all different religious backgrounds with a shared interest and love for singing Jewish music. BerKalit began with one Jewish student with a passion for vocal arranging who dreamed of finding a unique collection of voices to join her in singing meaningful music. When the impact of their voices in harmony became clear, BerKalit decided to transition from a group of friends singing together to an organized, officially recognized Berklee club.
We aim to bridge the gap between Jewish music and high-level contemporary collegiate a cappella, build Jewish community on campus inclusive to all students, and use our voices to spiritually uplift the Greater Boston Area and beyond. BerKalit's vision is to bring a new light to the incredible a cappella scene at Berklee by bringing Jewish music into the mix.
We will treat one another with Kavod (respect) and lead with Ruach (spirit). We wish to hold a space for students seeking Kehillah (community) and as we sing Jewish music, remain open and welcome to anyone seeking Limud (learning) regardless of religious affiliation.
Our goals for this year include:
- Add five new Hebrew songs to our repertoire list (which already consists of three songs)
- Develop an hour-long workshop that we can lead at Jewish day schools in the Greater Boston Area
- Perform a 30-minute set at one synagogue, one school, and one Jewish organization's event by the end of the semester
- Register for a caf or Red Room show
We are incredibly proud to be Berklee's first jewish a cappella group! In the few months since BerKalit’s founding, we have become national title winners earning all-star status in Jewish Star, season 5; performed national award-winning arrangements created by BerKalit arrangers throughout the Greater Boston Area; and recorded and released our very own music video. With recognition from many of our Jewish and musical inspirations including Avi Kaplan, Ben Bram, and Rob Dietz, and we are extraordinarily proud to be Berklee’s first Jewish a cappella group.
We have collaborated with Boston University Hillel, the Vilna Shul, Brandeis University's Manginah, and BerkleeJews!
