Vocalist/composer Christiane Karam presents NAR, alongside Vadim Neselovskyi (piano), Naseem Alatrash (cello), Peter Slavov (upright bass), and Keita Ogawa (percussion). The project, released on January 28, 2022 to rave reviews, spans five languages and a myriad of musical influences (namely classical, jazz, Middle Eastern, and Balkan).
The title, NAR, means ‘fire’ in Arabic and is a reference to the trials we often have to overcome to rise into our freedom, power, and truth. It also poignantly alludes to the devastating blast that wiped out one third of Beirut on August 4, 2020. The record is, in part, a tribute to the victims of that tragedy and also—and most importantly—a celebration of resilience, connection, and the triumph of joy in the face of adversity. It explores themes common to our shared humanity like love, grief, leaving home, belonging, and overcoming.
At a time when the planet is reeling from a catastrophic global crisis, and in the midst of another raging war, it is sure to bring hope, healing, and fortitude. Part of the proceeds will go to the UNCHR in support of Ukrainian refugees.
"There aren't many albums quite like NAR, and that's a very good thing." — Michael Toland, The Big Takeover
