In Their Own Words

"In my teaching, my goal is to help the student have real success playing songs, and playing them with solid musical qualities: good time, tone, intonation, rhythm, harmony, and improvising that is melodic. This takes practice, listening. When you succeed at this, you really know that you've done something!"

"My students are often interested in the fact that I can play any song I know as a chordal arrangement, without having to write it out first, or play a chord-melody arrangement spontaneously from a lead sheet. If professional pianists do this, why not guitarists?"

"While I was studying at Berklee, one of my teachers told us 'I wish that I had worked harder at music when I was younger.' We considered him to be a great player, so this was very motivating."

"I feel that reading music has even more value for developing your improvising than we have previously thought. While reading and improvising may seem opposite, they are mutually supporting activities. Reading can be a way of thinking even more precisely about what you want to play. This is what an improviser does."
