Community Health Musician Certificate

The Community Health Musician Certificate supports musicians and community leaders inspired to use their musical skills to benefit the well-being of others. This program is intentionally designed to emphasize expertise, scope of practice and boundaries of practice so that community musicians can provide experiences that are both relevant, meaningful and safe for themselves and participants.

Through thoughtfully curated trainings, field experiences, and program development support, community health musicians learn to design and implement inclusive music based experiences to meet the needs of the well-being priorities of their respective communities. This includes fostering group music experiences to target the detrimental effects of isolation, stigmatization, lack of agency, and more with older adults, veterans, youth, or within peer recovery.

The curriculum includes modules focused on music, health, and well-being; research and practice within the arts in health landscape; ethical and cultural considerations; musicianship tools and resources; and community program development. A hybrid format is used, with a combination of remote coursework and in-person intensives that take place over the course of two weekends. Post-certificate completion, graduates will have continued opportunities for supervision, networking, and resource sharing to ensure communities of support throughout program expansion.

The program is intended for:

  • Those curious about the unique role music plays in enhancing health and well-being within the community.
  • Self-identified musicians interested in augmenting their own skills to facilitate music-based experiences that foster community health and well-being.
  • Community leaders and arts administrators seeking tools and techniques to build communal connection through music.
  • Educators exploring equity-oriented frameworks to advance programs in arts and health.

Length of time to completion:

Nine months
