The Connect 2022 EDI Summit at Berklee College of Music is bringing electronic musicians, performers, educators, manufacturers, and thought leaders together from around the United States, to explore the current and future state of electronic music performance, digital musical instruments, and performance practices. Berklee’s Electronic Production and Design Department (EPD) will be hosting the three-day weekend event on June 3-5 in Boston.

The EPD Department manages a principal instrument program called the Electronic Digital Instrument (EDI). This musical instrument performance-based program provides students the opportunity to fully participate in a college-level music curriculum using a computer and performance controllers as their main musical instrument. Within the EDI program, we fully embrace all aspects of electronic performance and we are excited to promote evolution in the field.

The theme for this year’s Connect EDI is Machines and Musicianship. It will feature performances, demonstrations, panel discussions, product showcases, educational round tables, and community connection. Our keynote speaker will be composer, virtuoso jazz musician, remixer, and electronic music producer Mark de Clive Lowe, who will speak about playing EDI instruments and incorporating them into a performance practice. Artists who will be presenting their unique approach to electronic music performance are Daedelus, dolltr!ck, Rishabh Rajan, Val Jeanty, and Dan Freeman. Additional artists, performers, and presenters will be announced soon.

At Connect 2022, we will include topics from a variety of perspectives on machines as musical instruments, including performing with isomorphic controllers, using multiple controllers in performance, building a performance rig, live looping, finger drumming, incorporating vocals in EDI performance, using EDIs in ensemble settings, using effects processing for live performance, creating pedagogy for digital instruments in the classroom, creating a performance practice, expressive control and MPE, instrument design, and the future of EDI performance.

The early bird conference fee is $150 through May 13. After May 13, the fee will be $200 for the weekend. A student discount rate is available: $75 with proof of student identification. Please send a photo of your current ID to elpd@berklee.edu to receive a discount code that can be applied during registration.
