Colombia Sings to Boston, Featuring Makawa and Duo Entre Dos
Makawa was formed in 2009 under the direction of Jimmy Alexander Palacio in the Colombian municipality of Don Matías. The band is named after the percussion instrument of the same name—a special type of drum utilized by indigenous musicians of the North Caribbean Coast of Colombia.
Makawa utilizes authentic Afro-Caribbean rhythms with percussive instruments such as the makawa, adding trumpets, clarinet, trombone, and bass to the mix to make a fuller sound.
Duo Entre Dos (Between Two), is a Colombian duo from the Andean Highlands of Antioquia. The band interprets traditional Colombian music, with performances that include songs accompanied by solo guitar.
