Berklee alumni, including a current associate professor, were recognized across genres at the 60th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, January 28. Seven alumni took home gold-plated gramophones on the music industry’s biggest night for their contributions to many of last year’s top albums, songs, and productions. Fresh off a win for Best Orchestrations at the Tony Awards, Alex Lacamoire B.M. ‘95 received his third Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album with the Dear Evan Hansen cast album, which features Boston Conservatory at Berklee alumna Laura Dreyfuss B.F.A. '10. Aimee Mann B.M. ‘80 took home her second Grammy for her album Mental Illness, the winner for Best Folk Album.
Claudio Ragazzi B.M. '84, guitarist for Pablo Ziegler Trio and an associate professor of film scoring at Berklee, won the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album for Jazz Tango. A fellow Berklee alumnus, Oscar Zambrano B.M. ‘03, served as mastering engineer for the album. In November 2016, Pablo Ziegler Trio performed at the Berklee Performance Center as part of the Signature Series at Berklee.
Remixer Dennis White ‘88 also took home a Grammy for his work on “You Move (Latroit Remix)” by Depeche Mode, a winner for Best Remixed Recording. Jeff Lorber ‘71 won the award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, a category in which he was nominated alongside three Berklee alumni, for his album Prototype with Jeff Lorber Fusion. In a rare tie, Andy Hall B.M. ‘97 and Chris Pandolfi ‘03 of the Infamous Stringdusters will share their Grammy with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, both winners for Best Bluegrass Album.
Greg Kurstin, an alumnus of the Berklee Five-Week Summer Performance Program, won his second consecutive Grammy for Producer of the Year (Non Classical) for his work with Kendrick Lamar, ZAYN, Halsey, Liam Gallagher, Beck, and Foo Fighters. David Frost, the winner for Producer of the Year (Classical), received recognition for his work with nine powerhouse classical acts such as Hat Trick Trio, which includes Berklee strings chair David K. Wallace.
