Berklee’s Summer in the City Concert Series Presents More Than 400 Free Performances in Boston Area

This summer, students, faculty, and alumni from Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory at Berklee will perform more than 400 free concerts at some of the most notable venues throughout Boston and the Greater Boston area as part of the Berklee Summer in the City concert series. The performances will take place through the end of September, culminating with the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival on Saturday, September 30.
The series will continue to feature beloved performance locations throughout the city, such as the Boston Public Library, the Boston Harbor Islands, the Lawn on D, and the Prudential Center. This season also marks the 10-year anniversary of Summer in the City performances at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Summer in the City performers will also be featured in free festivals around Boston, including the Tito Puente Latin Music Series and Jazz at the Fort in Roxbury’s Highland Park.
New venues for the 2017 series include the Boston Public Market, the Steps at Millennium Towers, the Kimpton Marlowe Hotel, and Castle Island (in partnership with WUMB-FM). Outside of Boston, performances will also take place in Cambridge, Wakefield, Winthrop, and Salem.
The series will present a variety of genres, including folk, jazz, R&B, Latin, pop, and opera as part of its 2017 programming. Notable performers this summer include electronic duo Sleeping Lion, metal and jazz vocalist and composer Haydee Irizarry, Panamanian saxophonist Samuel Batista, R&B performer Kyle Thornton, and Madagascar-born vocalist Niu Raza.
“Summer in the City is one of our very best contributions to the local community with free performances all summer long by the world's next chart-toppers, brooding creative geniuses, and Grammy Award winners,” said Berklee President Roger H. Brown. Past performers have included Esperanza Spalding, Betty Who, Dopapod, Haerts, and the Stray Birds.
