An evening of cello works performed live by Amanda Emenecker (M.M. '21, cello), including pieces by Max Bruch, Benjamin Britten, Leoš Janáček, and Franghiz Ali-Zadeh.

Bruch’s "Kol Nidrei" is based on the Jewish prayer by the same name that is recited during Yom Kippur. Britten’s Suite No. 3 for Solo Cello incorporates several Russian folk songs, and Janáček’s "Pohádka" is a chamber work for cello and piano that depicts scenes from an old Russian poem. "Oyan!," by Azerbaijani composer Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, is a solo cello work whose title has various translations in Azerbaijan, such as “awaken,” “be courageous,” “come to yourself,” and “rebel.”

Emenecker says “This program speaks to me about the unprecedented and challenging past year that we have all endured and continue to endure. During trying times and times of suffering, it is common for people to turn to various things in search of comfort and strength, whether it be religion (Bruch), folk songs and heritage (Britten), or literature (Janáček), to name a few. Ultimately, however, it is our own inner strength that carries us through life and times of hardship (Ali-Zadeh). Oyan!"
