Hugh Macdonald is a 19-year-old singer-songwriter raised in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and France. He now resides in Boston, studying songwriting, production, and business at Berklee College of Music. From the age of five, when he ran off stage after singing and playing a shaky rendition of "Yellow Submarine" on guitar, he has always loved performing. Going through his pop-punk phase, he played all over France with his band at the time. Macdonald now focuses on his solo music, best described as introspective folk. He takes inspiration from artists like Ben Howard and Leonard Cohen, but also from philosophy, which he has always found himself drawn to. Macdonald also writes for and plays in a duo in Boston called Think of England. He released two albums at age 13, self-produced on an iPad, and recently released his first studio-quality EP, which he took on tour across the West Coast over the summer of 2016. His music has been featured on several of the most popular podcasts, blogs, publications, and local radio stations across the U.S. and Europe.
