Community Conversation Series: Intersectionality in the Black Community

The Black Scholars Initiative and Diversity and Inclusion team present a safe space for BSI students to come together and discuss intersectionality in the Black community. In this one hour session, students will be joined by two community leaders from BSI and DEI, Savannah McLean, and Dr. Chloe Swindler, respectively. The community leaders will be there as a support and to help start the discussion and establish a safe space.
This event will take place February 28 from 1-2 pm virtually via a zoom link sent out to all BSI students.
What is intersectionality?
Google defines intersectionality as "the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage." Every Black person lives a life full of intersectionalities and therefore has a unique perspective to offer because of their experiences. The diaspora is wide and colorful, stretching across oceans, state lines, and lifetimes. We all have something to learn from each other. With the diversity of the BSI community, this is a fantastic space in which to engage and learn.
