In this presentation, John Hasse, curator of American music at the Smithsonian and the Professional Education Division's Herb Alpert Scholar in Residence, draws on film clips and rare photographs to provide curatorial insight into Frank Sinatra’s brilliant art.

Sinatra was many things: husband, father, controversial celebrity, and acclaimed movie actor. But it was his genius as a singer and interpreter of American popular song that has secured his place in history.

Sinatra stands as a giant in the musical world because of his deeply personal singing style. His gifts? A rich, appealing baritone; an unmistakable sound; smooth phrasing; crystalline diction; and superior arrangements. And most of all, he had a towering talent of conveying the meaning of the songs’ words. He was the ultimate voice actor ... of song.

You will view footage of classic Sinatra, including “I’ve Got You under My Skin,” “My Kind of Town,” “My Way,” “One for My Baby (And One More for the Road),” and more.
