Commencement 2001

A few months after receiving the ultimate recognition from the music industry—four Grammy awards—theleaders of Steely Dan will accept honors from the academic world. Donald Fagen, who attended Berklee in 1966, and Walter Becker received Honorary Doctor of Music degrees at Berklee's 2001 commencement ceremony on May 12, 2001. Appealing equally to lovers of jazz and rock, and recognized for both musicianship and genius for creating timeless pop, Steely Dan has always attracted a large audience while maintaining a singular musical vision.

Despite early hits such as "Rikki Don't Lose that Number" and "Reelin' in the Years," Steely Dan never received any awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) until its recent "Two Against Nature" came before the Academy. The album received the coveted Album of the Year award, as well as Best Pop Performance by a Group or Duo with Vocals, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Engineered Album/Non-Classical. The band was inducted earlier this year into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fagen and Becker became doctors of music as 639 students graduated on May 12, 2001.
