Berklee College of Music and two premier world music festivals: Lotus (Lollapalooza Chile) and Lollapalooza Brazil, have announced the winners of the first Lollapalooza master’s scholarships to attend the master’s program in contemporary performance at Berklee’s international campus in Valencia, Spain beginning in September 2013.

Twenty-nine-year-old Juan Cristóbal Aliaga Jorquera, a guitarist from Santiago de Chile and former graduate of Berklee in Boston, has been awarded the Lotus (Lollapalooza Chile) scholarship. Luiza Sales Rangel, 25, a singer-songwriter from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and graduate of the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, has received the Lollapalooza Brazil scholarship.

“Scholarships are an integral part of the Berklee philosophy ensuring that the most gifted musicians from all over the world have the means to attend our programs,” explained Guillermo Cisneros, Berklee's vice president for global initiatives, and executive director, Berklee in Valencia. “Thanks to the extended support and collaboration of Lollapalooza, two outstanding graduates from Chile and Brazil are being given this opportunity on our master’s programs at the Berklee Valencia campus.”

“Both Juan Cristóbal Aliaga Jorquera and Luiza Sales Rangel are highly deserving of their scholarships and we look forward to welcoming them onto the programs in September to help prepare them for successful international careers on the world stage.”

The Lotus (Lollapalooza Chile) and Lollapalooza Brazil scholarships for the 2013-14 master’s programs at Berklee Valencia mark an extension of the collaboration between Berklee and Lollapalooza. Sharing the common goals of providing opportunity and preparation for emerging young talent to succeed in the global music business, the alliance, now in its second year, aims to bring more outstanding musicians to Berklee and provide the opportunity for gifted musicians from Brazil and Chile to refine their musical skills through study at an international level.

“The essence of Lollapalooza is about artist discovery and providing opportunity for emerging bands to reach new audiences,” said Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell.

Both Aliaga and Sales will receive full tuition scholarships for the one-year intensive master’s program which begins in September 2013. Additionally Aliaga will also receive support from the Chilean government who will provide all transportation costs to attend Berklee Valencia.

In September 2013, Berklee Valencia will welcome its second master class student intake and launch a new and forth master’s program: music technology and innovation, further extending the choice of programs and adding to the master’s in contemporary performance; global entertainment and music business; and scoring for film, television, and video games launched last year.
