Medical Care for Students

Enrolled students who have a question about a health topic or need advice about what level of care to seek can speak with a nurse at 161 Massachusetts Avenue, fourth floor, in the Counseling Center, Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5;00 p.m. Call 617-747-2019 if you are not sure where to go first.

Students, faculty, and staff experiencing a medical emergency should either call Public Safety at 617-747-8888 (extension 8888 if on campus) or 911 from any location.

Tufts Medical Center is the preferred medical center for currently enrolled Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory at Berklee students. Tufts Medical Center is a major academic medical center with its main campus located in the heart of downtown Boston. It provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for both adults and children. Tufts Medical Center has pioneered innovative programs in clinical care, biomedical research, education, and health delivery for more than 220 years.

Many services are available through Tufts Medical Center's Collegiate Clinic for Wellness, including same-day/next-day urgent care visits, and their goal is to provide the highest level of quality care for all of our student's needs. Berklee is committed to ensuring ease of access to medical care to reduce barriers to quality care.

Students who are currently enrolled can contact Tufts Medical Center's dedicated student line at 617-636-6006 to schedule an appointment in the Collegiate Clinic for Wellness (CCW) or to request more information. The phone line's hours of operation are Monday–Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no charge and no copay for visits to the CCW. Lab work, imaging studies, and appointments with other providers at TMC outside of the CCW will be charged to insurance. All major insurances are accepted, including the Berklee-sponsored health insurance plan .

Although Berklee has a relationship with Tufts Medical Center, students are welcome to pursue medical services at any location. Boston offers world-class health care and has a wide range of medical services available. Some of those locations are listed below.

Can I get round-trip transportation to Tufts Medical Center?

Tufts Medical Center can help coordinate round-trip transportation to the Collegiate Clinic for Wellness from campus at no cost to students for who are physically unable to access public transportation because of an injury. You can request a ride when scheduling your appointment. The on-campus pick-up and drop-off location is listed below.

What should I do in a medical emergency?

Students who are seriously injured or very sick, and in need of emergency medical care should go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately. There is no direct medical care available on campus.

In the case of life-threatening situations or where students are unable to transport themselves to the hospital, call Public Safety at 617-747-8888 (or dial extension 8888 from any campus phone) if on campus, or dial 911 from any location.

Please note: Hospitals and ambulances are not appropriate for regular medical care. There is usually a long wait time at hospitals for non-urgent patients, and the expense is usually higher than if the patient is seen in a routine healthcare setting.

Do I need to select a primary care physician (PCP) at Tufts Medical Center in order to be seen by urgent care?

During your time in Boston, we recommend that each student establish care with a local provider. Students who select a PCP at Tufts will be able to call for a same-day/next-day urgent care appointment. Call 617-636-6006 to make an appointment.

How do I access after-hours telehealth with Tufts Medical Center?

Enrolled students have access to telehealth through the Tufts Medical Center Emergency Department. Tufts ED medical providers are available seven days a week, Monday through Friday 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 pm. (last appointment at 10:45 p.m.). If you are experiencing a medical emergency please call 911.

Where can I get my immunizations or flu shot?

All required immunizations, as well as the flu (influenza) shot, human papillomavirus (HPV) shot, and more, are available at the locations below. In most cases, the required immunizations can be received at pharmacies; however, you may also go to a hospital or doctor's office to receive these immunizations if you prefer. Find a vaccination location near you. Immunizations are generally covered by insurance, but please check with your insurance carrier to confirm coverage.

Do I need a health care proxy or parental involvement in my medical care?

As Berklee does not have direct health care on campus, anyone wishing to submit health care proxy documents should do so with a health care provider in Boston. Should students wish to establish care with Berklee's preferred medical provider, Tufts Medical Center, they should contact Tufts directly with their health care proxy questions.

As students who are 18 and older are legal adults in Massachusetts, students must make their own appointments and request any medical information on their own if a health care proxy has not been submitted.

Fenway Health specializes in services for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities; individuals with HIV/AIDS; and those with limited access to health services. However, care is available to anyone. Services provided by Fenway Health providers include primary care for adults and children, women’s health, transgender health, behavioral health, eye care, and dental care.

Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates Kenmore

Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (HVMA) in Kenmore Square is a multi-specialty group practice very close to campus. HVMA offers a wide range of care and services. They offer appointments as well as an urgent care clinic (by referral from PCP only) It is important to know that HVMA is not an emergency medical facility.

You will need to show your insurance card before receiving care or filling a prescription.

Where can I get STD testing?

Getting tested for STDs is quick and easy. If you are sexually active, getting tested for STDs is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health. Most of the time, STDs have no symptoms. Testing is the only way to know for sure if you have an STD. If you have insurance and a provider, you can get STD testing as part of a medical appointment. Below are some locations in the area where you can get STD testing as well.

SECHC offers education/prevention services, screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as well as contraceptive counseling during all clinic hours for both scheduled and walk-in appointments. Where can I get a sexual assault exam?

If you are involved in an incident of sexual assault or other sexual misconduct, we encourage you to get a sexual assault medical exam and have other injuries documented, whether or not you know your assailant. You may decide later what actions, if any, you wish to take. Receiving medical services in no way obligates you to proceed further.

A sexual assault medical exam is:

confidential and free;
preventive treatment for sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy, and evidence collection, if sought; and
conducted by a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE), who is a registered nurse with advanced training and certification in conducting sexual assault exams.

Berklee Public Safety can be reached at 617-747-8888 for assistance with emergency transportation to a hospital for emergency medical attention.
