Berklee City Music Boston

Since its launch in 1991, Berklee City Music Boston, the original City Music program, has grown with inspiring vigor, establishing a continuum of learning that comprises the Music Mentoring Program, Faculty Outreach Program, the Saturday Preparatory School, the Saturday Upper School, the Summer Youth Scholarship for Talent and Excellence in Music (SYSTEM 5), and the Continuing College Scholarship Award.

Music Mentoring Program

This program, often the point of entry into Berklee City Music, is designed for students in grades 7 through 12 who are interested in improving their music skills and are exploring music as a career. Berklee student, faculty, and staff mentors provide theory classes and one-to-one instrumental/vocal coaching during the regular academic year. Students who are active in the mentoring program often continue their studies in the Berklee Five-Week Summer Performance Program.

City Music Saturday Preparatory School

The City Music Saturday Preparatory School, located on site at the Boston Arts Academy, provides an early experience for Boston students in grades 6 through 8 at the city's premier high school for the visual and performing arts. Staffed with Berklee faculty who implement a Berklee-designed curriculum, the school integrates the college campus experience with select field trip activities to Berklee's campus, where preparatory school students often participate in events hosted by the City Music Saturday Upper School.

City Music Saturday Upper School

The City Music Saturday Upper School, which began in the fall of 1998, offers rigorous, tailored classroom and musical training throughout the year for select Boston-area high school students who have participated in one or more other City Music components.

The program enables Berklee to move beyond its familiar model of mentoring to providing intensive, focused instruction that will prepare students to successfully meet the challenges they will face in college or in other higher-education settings.

The Saturday school operates for 28 instructional weeks over a nine-month period. All students receive a minimum of 126 hours of instruction, which includes weekly private lessons, a Musicianship/Theory class, and two additional hours of ensemble study and/or master classes taught by visiting artists.
