Special Services for Students with Disabilities

Learning accommodations are available for students with physical limitations and students with documented learning disabilities. Services available, based on individual need, may include academic accommodations, assistance with academic planning, career advising, and referrals to on-campus support, including adaptive technology and tutoring. Students are always actively involved in decision-making regarding their specific needs and are encouraged to work towards increased self-advocacy and independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start planning for my (or my child's) accommodations?

It is always a good idea to alert the college about needed accommodations several months before a student's first semester of attendance. Documentation of a student's disability and the need for accommodation should also be submitted well in advance of first semester attendance. Accommodations in classroom teaching methods and testing cannot be offered unless appropriate documentation is on file with the college.

What, exactly, constitutes documentation?

Documentation should be no more than 5 years old and should include neuropsychological or educational testing results that indicate specific learning strengths and weaknesses, as well as summary recommendations for reasonable accommodations in classroom teaching and testing.

If I (or my child) realize(s) towards the end of the semester (say, when finals come around) that I am (or my child is) having trouble and need(s) more time on exams, can I send documentation then? Or, is it ever too late to provide documentation?

Accommodations (like extended time on tests) are based on recommendations within the documentation, can only be requested through the Special Services Counselors in the Counseling & Advising Center, and MUST be made with a minimum 2 week notice to instructors, so the instructors can plan the accommodation accordingly.
