Berklee Global Jazz Institute Workshop at the Newport Jazz Festival®

The Berklee Global Jazz Institute Workshop at the Newport Jazz Festival, hosted by Salve Regina University, offers aspiring young musicians, including vocalists and nontraditional instrumentalists, a full-scholarship (tuition and housing), five-day intensive jazz program taught by world-renowned faculty and led by Danilo Pérez, artistic director, and Marco Pignataro, managing director. The program features ensemble rehearsals, master classes by musicians who have appeared in the Newport Jazz Festival, and final performances by all students, with selected groups chosen to play on the Newport Jazz Festival stage.
Participants study and stay in the heart of Newport on the campus of Salve Regina University.

Berklee will provide the backline including drum set, amps, and other equipment, but drummers will need to bring their own hi-hats and cymbals. All instrumental players except pianists are expected to bring or rent their own instruments. Suggestions for rental include:
Once accepted, students will be placed into small ensembles based on instrumentation and level of musicianship.
Below is the proposed daily schedule for the Newport Jazz Festival Workshop:
- 9:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m. Global Jazz Forum
- 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Directed Study in Improvisation (grouped by instruments)
- 2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Global Jazz Ensembles
- 4:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. Ensemble Performance Laboratory
- 6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. Dinner
- 7:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Jam Sessions
Participants study and stay in the heart of Newport's Bellevue Avenue Historic District, on the campus of Salve Regina University. Friends and family of program participants are invited to make a reservation at one of the hotels in the area.
Each camper will receive bed linens and a set of towels. Free laundry facilities and wireless internet will be provided. Aside from your personal belongings, we recommend bringing extra spending money.
All tuition and housing expenses for this program are covered in full by a scholarship. Please note that you must be registered for a program in order to be considered for a scholarship.
