Cecil Adderley

 

Music Education Chair Cecil Adderley received the Academic Achievement Award from the Western Carolina University Alumni Association at a recent ceremony.

 

Melissa Howe

String Department Chair Melissa Howe, Woodwinds Professor Barbara LaFitte, and Composition Professor Ronald Feldman performed during this past summer's Boston Landmarks Orchestra season. The orchestra presents free classical music concerts to a diverse audience at various local-area landmarks.

Tom Stein

Professional Music Professor Tom Stein was a visiting professor at Modern Muzik Akademisi and Robert College, both in Istanbul, Turkey. Stein taught classes and workshops on a variety of topics, including music theory in performance to marketing to artist development.

Apostolos Paraskevas

 

Composition Professor Apostolos Paraskevas and Mathew Tucciarone directed the film I Finally Did It, which premiered at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. The film received a Gold Level Award at the 2010 California Film Awards and a Silver Screen Award at the 2010 Nevada Film Festival.

 

Sergio Belloti

Assistant Professor of Percussion Sergio Bellotti was invited to teach four master classes at the KoSA International Percussion Workshop, Camp, and Festival. The July events featured drummers Neil Peart, Jimmy Cobb, and Zoro.

David Harris

Assistant Professor of Harmony David Harris toured with the group Debo Band this summer, performing traditional and original Ethiopian music. Highlights included a sold-out concert at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts courtyard concert series, and performances at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival with Feni Dika, traditional Ethiopian dancers and musicians. The ensemble also gave concerts and workshops at the Lowell Folk Festival.

Larry Bell

Associate Professor of Composition Larry Bell conducted his work Baroque Concerto at the Boston Early Music Festival in June.

Greg Osby

 

Ensemble Professor Greg Osby appeared at the Village Vanguard jazz club in New York City for a six-night run August 9-14. During the stint, he featured alumni performers Melissa Aldana '10 andKendrick Scott '02 as well as pianist and composer Marc Copland and bassist Steve LaSpina.

 

Beth Denisch

 

Composition Professor Beth Denisch will premiere her piece Yanvalou on November 13 with the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra. Denisch has also received an invitation to be the composer in residence at the University of Missouri from November 10-12, and keynote speaker for the Women in the Arts Conference.

 

John McGann

String Professor John McGann recently premiered a new piece written for mandolin, string quartet, and rhythm section with the ensemble Classical Tangent at Tanglewood in Lenox, MA.
