In her fifth and latest album, 2016’s Emily’s D+Evolution, Grammy winner and Berklee alumna Esperanza Spalding B.M. ‘05 plays with expressing different sides of herself through the character of “Emily.”

"I felt like there was a lot that I hadn't explored yet that I wanted to explore, and Emily was the vehicle who had been in me and came in and arrived to open up that vent," Spalding recently told the BIRN’s Tony Brown in a recorded interview for the station. At Emily's essence, she says, “it’s the part of myself that didn't have space to play and to be in charge sometimes."

Listen to the first part of the interview in this special edition of Inside Berklee. And then go to part two, in which Spalding talks with Brown about her early days and influences in Portland, Oregon.
