Open Music Blogs: Dispatches from the Summer Lab

The 2016 Open Music Initiative's Summer Lab brought a team of fellows together to focus on gathering clean data during the creative process of writing and recording music as well as connecting artists and fans.

From July 11–29, 2016, BerkleeICE and IDEO hosted a summer lab for The Open Music Initiative that explored the intersection of open source technologies, creator rights, and music consumption. Eighteen students, including 15 from Berklee, and one from Boston Conservatory at Berklee, were selected to address the challenge of getting quality data about music into a shared ledger, and engaging fans deeper into the creative relationship with artists.  George Howard, music industry thought leader and associate professor of music business/management, was present for much of the lab, coaching students, hosting panels, and attending the demo days. He provided a deeper analysis of the learning and results from the Summer Lab through two postings on the Open Music Initiative's blog, one after the initial demo day, and one after the final demo day.
