Berklee Summer in the City at Wakefield Public Library

Berklee artists perform in this architectural gem of a library in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Established in 1856, the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library is an excellent venue for taking in live music.

Berklee Summer in the City presents free performances by Berklee musicians in a variety of different styles and genres. This summer, every Thursday at 6:00 p.m., from June 2 through August 25, a number of acts are playing at the Wakefield Public Library.

Here's what's coming up:

  • July 7Samuel Batista 
    Panamanian alto saxophone player Samuel Batista is the first musician of his family. In September 2012, he moved to Boston to study at Berklee on the prestigious Presidential Scholarship and has since gained admission to the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. He is currently working as the bandleader of the Third Land Quintet, which formed in 2015 and is in the process of recording its first EP.
  • July 14Jacob McCaslin
    Jacob McCaslin is an award-winning vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. Influenced by the work of soul and blues artists, McCaslin has been composing and producing his own music for over 11 years, and is still growing as a musician as he continues his studies at Berklee as a scholarship student.
  • July 21Dashina 
    Dashina is a world music vocal trio comprising Inna Dudukina, Dana Protsenko, and Harshitha Krishnan. Each vocalist has her unique style of singing, giving the trio a style that ranges from the genres of Balkan to jazz. The group focuses on the traditional music of Eastern Europe, Russia, and the Balkans, and includes elements of rock, jazz, EDM, and metal. The product that comes from this fusion project is Dashina.
  • July 28Pia Salvia
    Though Belgian harpist and singer Pia Salvia has a classical background, her passion is to explore the harp in many musical genres. In 2012, she was selected for the reality talent search show The Voice in France and made it to the top 20. After that, she played and sang for different projects and decided to go deeper in her exploration of the harp. SInce beginning her studies at Berklee, Salvia has spent a semester studying Mediterranean music at Berklee's campus in Valencia, Spain, and has travelled to Colombia and Brazil to learn more about new musical styles and cultures.
  • August 4Alex Madeline Quartet 
    Alexandre Madeline started playing saxophone at the age of 14, studying and exploring a range of different styles and genres such as classical, jazz, funk, and pop. Upon coming to Berklee, Madeline formed his jazz quartet with a number of talented peers (Simon Moullier on vibes, Giuseppe Campisi on bass, and Juan Ale Saenz on drums). Their cohesion allows them to play music without limits, and they are always full of surprises. Madeline has traveled to Azerbaijan, playing with the Emil Afrasiyab Group for the Baku International Jazz Festival in 2013, and his group has performed at the Kennedy Center; Carnegie Hall; the Kursaal in Bern, Switzerland; and the Saint Germain des Près Jazz Festival in Paris.
  • August 11MIXCLA
    Led by composer, pianist, and singer Zahili Gonzalez Zamora, with Gerson Esteban Lazo Quiroga on bass and backing vocals and Takafumi Nikaido on percussion, MIXCLA gives the audience a one-of-a-kind musical experience.
  • August 18a l e a
    a l e a is a singer-songwriter from Barrancas, Colombia. She grew up surrounded by local indigenous communities and cultural events like Barranquilla's Carnival, which have greatly influenced her musical perspective and compositions.
  • August 25Sudacas
    Sudacas was founded by Marianella Rojas from Venezuela (voice and percussion) and Esther Rojas from Colombia (bass). The duet creates a fusion of traditional music from their native countries with jazz harmony and pop elements that give its songs a subtle, fresh sound. Sudacas is currently working on its second single, “Meeting Again,” to be released this year.

  • June 16Max Brandenburg
    Max Brandenburg is a classically trained pianist and singer-songwriter who combines his talents in his original music: a catchy mix of heartfelt pop, jazz, and soul alongside stirring acoustic rock ballads.
  • June 23Kathryn Hallberg
    Emotional, evocative, warm, natural, and firmly rooted in Americana with light pop and country stylings: this describes Kathryn Hallberg's music. In the summer of 2008, Hallberg began recording her first EP, No Surprise, with Kyle Hutton, producer and founder of Real Life Real Music. In 2012, Hallberg returned to the studio with Hutton to record her second EP, Nocturnal, which features musical contributions from Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks, Robert Earl Keen) and mixing by Niko Bolas (Neil Young, James Taylor). Nocturnal was selected as one of the best local albums of 2012 by both the Houston Chronicle and the Houston Press
  • June 30Nasty Tango Duo
    During their studies at Berklee, Nacho González '16 of Uruguay and Naseem Alatrash '14 of Palestine came together to create the unique group Nasty Tango Duo. Combining the tradition of tango with Middle Eastern flavors, the band creates a deeply elegant and vibrant journey for its listeners. The duo has performed extensively in New York and Boston, and is now preparing for a tour of the Middle East.
