In a Slush Music article, Marko Ahtisaari, chief executive officer of Sync Project, explained why the Open Music Initiative (OMI) has been an essential component on his path to success.

Sync Project aims to discover how music affects our minds and bodies. Ahtisaari is a part of OMI, and said he recognizes how data managed on a decentralized blockchain platform is important for startups like his and for the music industry as a whole.

The article noted that previous attempts to build a music rights database have failed in part because some tried to exert too much control over the data. By contrast, OMI is working on an open source protocol that allows for data to be tracked by more than one entity. Additionally, as a nonprofit initiative led by prestigious academic institutions and media entrepreneurs, OMI does not run the risk of becoming proprietary.
