"Finding time to just live and view life, sit, watch people, exist, is really a huge part of a writer's job," says alumna Melissa Ferrick, an associate professor in Berklee's Songwriting Department who has been watching, writing, and sharing with her audience for more than two decades.

She's been a touring musician ever since she left Berklee as a student and began singing in clubs in New York City. In 1991, she toured with Morrissey as his opening act and released her first studio album in 1993. She returned to Berklee as a faculty member in 2013, and last year released her 17th album, Melissa Ferrick.

In this episode of Inside Berklee, she talks about honesty in songwriting, getting students to open up, touring while teaching, and more.
