Part 2: Larry Watson/Motown

August 29, 2011
The group performed a vibrant set in revue style. From "What's Goin' On" to "Friendship Train", from "All I Need to Get By" to "Heard it through the Grapevine" the audience was on its feet - giving no less than three standing ovations during the thirty-minute set. And this was not your average audience: Charles Blow from the New York Times. Gwen Ifill from Washington Week and The NewsHour. Activist and educator Charles Hamilton Houston, Jr. Activist/Author Tim Wise. Professors Anita Hill (Brandeis), Charles Ogletree and Randall Kennedy (Harvard Law School), plus a plethora of other academics, journalists, politicians, and proponents of civic justice. And on their feet throughout: Berry Gordy and Suzanne de Passe. Larry Watson's special tribute, set to song "Kings and Queens" - complete with a projected photo montage - was met with heartfelt appreciation by Mr. Gordy, who was visibly moved and shook every one of the performers' hands with meaning.
