New York Times: For Free Songs, Video Trumps Audio

In a recent article for the New York Times, Stephen Hyman asks how internet giant YouTube has avoided the ever increasing scrutiny being directed at music streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Allen Bargfrede, executive director of Rethink Music, an initiative of BerkleeICE, weighs in on Hyman's query and actively wonders why YouTube has avoided the spotlight given that they are the most popular streaming site, but they pay artists less than competitors like Spotify. According to Bargfrede, "YouTube pays music rights' owners, typically record labels, around one-thousandth of a cent per stream."
