Berklee has named Betsy Newman vice president of Student Affairs and dean of students. She will provide strategic vision and direction for the entire Division of Student Affairs, which includes Student Activities, LiveWell Student Health and Wellness, Housing and Auxiliary Services, the Counseling and Advising Center, Student Conduct, Parent Services, and the Career Development Center. Newman comes to Berklee from Babson College and replaces Larry Bethune, who is retiring after 44 years with the college.

“I feel I can help shape the educational experience in ways that both foster and advance students’ developmental journeys as creators of self, music, and the broader communities in which they hope to influence, inspire, and serve,” said Newman. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience all the musical gifts, talents, and treasures that are Berklee.”

“Betsy has empowered students to translate their passion and ideas into action through volunteerism, artistic pursuits, and new ventures,” said Berklee president Roger H. Brown. “Her research on creative entrepreneurship and leadership parallels Berklee students using music as their creative catalyst.”

Newman is the former vice president of Student Affairs and program strategy at her alma mater, Babson College. Previously, she served as the director of planning and institutional research at Stonehill College. Newman earned a master’s degree (M.Ed. in higher education administration) from Harvard University and a doctorate (Ed.D. in higher education management) with dissertation distinction from the University of Pennsylvania.

She brings to Berklee a wealth of administrative leadership, strategic management, and student development experience. At Babson, Newman designed and implemented innovative strategies, systems, and approaches across a broad portfolio of functional areas that have enhanced the student experience.
