November 25, 2014

Two Berklee alumni took home gold-plated gramophones from the 15th annual Latin Grammy Awards, held November 20, 2014, in Las Vegas. Carlos Barros ’94 received his award for engineering Record of the Year “Universos Paralelos” by Jorge Drexler featuring Ana Tijoux. Marta Gomez ’02 won Best Latin Children's Album for Coloreando: Traditional Songs for Children in Spanish. Barros and Gomez had not previously won Latin Grammy Awards. Veteran Latin Grammy Award winner Alvaro Alencar '93 won his eleventh Latin Grammy for mixing the Best Cumbia/Vallenato Album, Celedón Sin Fronteras 1 by Jorge Celedón featuring various artists.

Ten alumni and one educator were nominated for 12 awards in five categories this year. Most appeared in the Record of the Year category, where they engineered five of the 10 nominated songs for artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Camila, and Carlos Vives. Others were nominated in the Album of the Year and Best Latin Jazz Album categories. Mediterranean Music Institute artistic director Javier Limon, a previous Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, and alumna Marian G. Villota '14 were nominated for Best Engineered Album on Limon’s Promesas De Tierra.

With these recent wins, 28 alumni have won 78 Latin Grammys since the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences founded the awards in 2000.
