Vanity Fair: Alumni Millennials Are Shaking Up the Jazz World

Vanity Fair is jazzed about the millennial musicians who are fueling the contemporary scene. Two articles and slideshows feature many Berkee alumni among more than 50 new artists who are part of the movement.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but Vanity Fair proves they can also be worth a thousand blue notes. In the article "These Millennials Are Shaking Up the Jazz World," the magazine celebrates a renaissance for jazz, a 100 year-old musical style that is seeing players in their 20s and 30s who are rooted in tradition but twisting it just enough to connect the genre to their generation. Berklee alumni play a big role in this movement, and the article and accompanying slideshow celebrates the contributions of Esperanza Spalding, Grace Kelly, Christian Scott, Melissa Aldana, Julian Lage, and others.

A companion article and slideshow, "The Jazz Youth-Quake: Others on the Upswing," celebrates other young vocalists and instrumentalists from the scene. A special shoutout goes to alumna Meghan Stabile, of Revive Music, who books and promotes many of the featured artists using traditional and technological means to engage contemporary jazz scenesters.
