India.Arie to Perform at Berklee’s 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

India.Arie, the acclaimed four-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, will perform a short set of her inspiring and empowering music as part of Berklee’s fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Series, which engages the Berklee community and the general public in celebration and discussion of the work of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how to further that work.
Berklee’s 2017 MLK Celebration will take place in the Berklee Performance Center on Friday, February 3, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. Themed “Mobilize, Educate, Elevate,” the event aims to embolden activists and demonstrate ways in which to persevere in the work exemplified by King so as to honor and renew his legacy. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot—author, Berklee trustee, Harvard professor, and tireless activist—will deliver the keynote address.
“Now, more than ever, there is the need for the performing arts and their ability to both create solidarity and challenge people all over the world to love oneself and one’s neighbor,” says event coordinator Joshua Crary, Berklee’s diversity programs advisor.
The event, which is supported by the talents and leadership of Berklee students, will also feature a performance by Bill Pierce, chair of Berklee’s Woodwinds Department, and will include the presentation of the Bill Pierce MLK Scholarship to its 2017 recipient.
India.Arie, who, in addition to selling tens of millions of her own records, is also an actress and producer, will speak about her artistic journey at a clinic for Berklee students the day of the event.
