Join us for an interactive performance and discussion that will inspire new ideas for combining words and music.

Leading the dialogue will be professors Neil Olmstead (piano) and Ana Guigui (voice) and visiting poet Sara Pirkle Hughes (a creative writing professor at the University of Alabama). The event is cosponsored by the Composition Department at Berklee College of Music and the Boston National Poetry Month Festival. It is hosted by professor Lucy Holstedt (harmony and jazz composition), a Poetry Festival board member.

Among the topics:

  • How does a composer select a poem for a musical setting?
  • What does it mean for a musician to collaborate with a poet?
  • How can the intended performers influence the design and interpretation?

Olmstead and Guigui will present selections from his recently composed song cycle, Secrets of Ferns. Two Hughes poems, What Hurts and Doe and Fawn, have been set to music and will be featured in this presentation.
