Berklee Summer in the CityWitness Matlou Trio
Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, pianist Witness Matlou is studying at Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. He's also studying in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, founded by Grammy-winning pianist and composer Danilo Perez. Witness has learned and, in many cases, performed with some of the big names in the jazz scene, including Perez, Joe Lovano, David Liebman, John Patitucci, Terri Lyne Carrington, Marco Pignataro, Ben Street, Adam Cruz, and others.
From learning to play music in church, Witness found himself in a long journey of evaluating the nature of music, purpose and role it plays in our lives. Influenced by the piano sound of Abdullah Ibrahim, Bheki Mseleku and other great South African musicians. Witness went to study music at the University of Kwazulu- Natal- Durban, along the South east coast of South Africa. Following a scholarship to study in the US, he spent a year at Drake University in Des Moines Iowa, then a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music.
Witness is also a composer and bandleader. He has toured and played professionally in Europe. Appeared with his trio at the Des Moines Arts Festival. He appeared with his trio at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival in 2012. Appearing at the Jazz in July festival in Des Moines- IA. Toured Costa Rica with his trio in 2012. Played in Paris with the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in 2013. Witness has appeared in many of the local jazz clubs in Boston and has shared the stage with some of the great musicians in Boston. September 2013, an appearance at Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Lincoln Center, at the Monterey Jazz Festival with the Berklee Global Jazz Ambassadors, featuring a Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Joe Lovano.
