Back in August of 2020, Tim Kaine and Roger H. Brown were on a bike trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway in Southern Virginia. In the town of Floyd, which has a strong musical tradition, Kaine shared his idea for a song called "Self-Unemployed.” Brown recruited veteran writer and Berklee songwriting professor Mark Simos (Alison Krauss, Infamous Stringdusters) to write with them. Brown brought in his friends Gary West and Alison Brown to produce the song and they immediately thought of Compass Records artist Trey Hensley for lead vocals. In a bit of serendipity, Hensley just happened to wear a Floyd General Store ball cap to the session.

The songwriting team also recruited lots of Berklee personnel to join in on the session, including alumni Matt Rollings '86, Sierra Hull '11, Jordan Perlson B.M. '04, and Gary West as well as Darol Anger, professor emeritus in the String Department and a visiting artist in the Berklee American Roots Program.

Watch the premiere of "Self-Unemployed" by the Wahoo Springs Band, featuring Trey Hensley.
