Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards will demonstrate her performance setup and answer questions from students about her songwriting process, her relationship with technology, and her activism.

Tune-Yards is the music project of Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner, a longtime collaborator. Garbus’s music draws from eclectic sources and utilizes elements such as loop pedals, ukulele, vocals, and lo-fi percussion. Tune-Yards’ 2011 album Whokill was ranked no. 1 in the Village Voice’s annual Pazz & Jop critic’s poll.

The 2014 album Nikki Nack featured the single “Water Fountain,” which was used by Google Pixel in a 2016 advertising campaign and received more than 20 million streams. Tune-Yards also provided the score for the science fiction film Sorry to Bother You, released earlier this year.
