Singer-songwriter Sterling Rhyne Sherman’s passion for music began at the age of five when she started teaching herself the piano. At 11, Sterling’s music interests expanded as she started singing with her mother and younger sister in church and exploring classical violin. Growing up, Sterling was constantly surrounded by music and art. Her mother, a vocalist; and her father, a visual artist, photographer, and music lover, supported her musical studies.

Upon attending Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, whose alumni include Norah Jones and Erykah Badu, Sterling further studied classical violin, piano, photography, guitar, and voice. In her junior year she began to concentrate her focus on voice, studying Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nina Simone, and writing her own compositions. In 2010, Sterling received a scholarship to attend Berklee, where she studies songwriting and professional music and expects to graduate this May. In the meantime, she leads songwriting workshops for students in elementary through high school grades in and around Boston, and she hopes to travel the world leading workshops to inspire youth toward self-expression and social consciousness. Her original music blends R&B and neo-soul and indie-pop, and she plans to release a project with her band later this year.
