Sapporo Junior Jazz School Band Premiere
Presented by faculty trumpeter Tiger Okoshi, this 22-piece jazz big band with selected junior high school students from the city of Sapporo, Japan, will premiere its concert before performing at the BeanTown Jazz Festival show on September 27.
Sapporo Junior Jazz School was founded in 2000 as a one-year project for Sapporo Jazz Forest, once the biggest Jazz Festival in Hokkaido prefecture. (Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido.) The aim was to offer quality jazz music, promote jazz locally, and cultivate amateur musicians.
There are two big bands in Sapporo Junior Jazz School: one for approximately 40 primary school students aged 6 to 12, the other for approximately 20 students who are 12 to 15 years old. This school is a one-year private jazz school. An audition is held in March every year and 150 children apply.
