Berklee Summer in the CityNikko Ielasi
Niccolo’ “Nikko” Ielasi was born in Italy and began studying music at the age of 7. He started focusing exclusively on piano at 13.
Attending the Umbria Jazz Festival for the first time, he was inspired by the artists on stage and became interested in improvisational music.
Since then, he has performed in different jazz festivals such as Ischia Jazz Festival, Foligno Jazz, Umbria Jazz and others. Focused on the Italian scene at first, he then won two different scholarships at Berklee. The first brought him to Boston in 2008 for the Five Week summer program; the next allowed him to attend Berklee as a full-time undergraduate student.
He has been exposed to many different genres of music and gradually built a personal style that successfully links the vocabulary of the jazz tradition to the rhythmic ideas and the harmonic concepts of the R&B and neo-soul traditions.
Italian bassist Fabrizio Sciacca and Korean drummer Jongkuk “JK” Kim complete Ielasi's jazz trio. Together, they explore a variety of music, from the great standards of the American Songbook to original compositions and some contemporary instrumental arrangements of pop and R&B songs.
