"The Checkout: Live at Berklee" featuringMelissa Aldana and Crash Trio
New York’s WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM and NPR Music proudly present year three of The Checkout: Live at Berklee—a concert at which critically acclaimed, New York-based performers return to their Berklee roots and perform for the world from Boston’s Cafe 939. Tonight’s concert features Melissa Aldana and Crash Trio with Melissa Aldana on tenor sax, Pablo Menares on bass, and Francisco Mela on drums. See the action in person as it is streamed live worldwide at 8:00 p.m. EST on NPRmusic.org.
A former recipient of Berklee’s Presidential Scholarship, Aldana was encouraged to apply to Berklee by Danilo Perez, who also invited her and her father to perform at the Panama Jazz Festival. At Berklee, Aldana studied with Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Frank Tiberi, Greg Osby, and Hal Crook, just to name a few. She also benefitted from private master classes under legendary bop saxophonist George Coleman, who continues to guide her progress and helps her sharpen her musicality.
Aldana graduated from Berklee in 2009 and currently lives in Manhattan, where she performs at the city’s best clubs, such as Blue Note, Iridium, Lincoln Center, Smalls, and Jazz Gallery, sharing the stage with contemporary jazz greats like Benny Golson, Greg Osby, George Garzone, Francisco Mela, and Antonio Sanchez. Aldana released her first album, Free Fall, in 2010, and followed that up with Second Cycle in 2012. Both albums were released on the Inner Circle Music label.
