Sponsored by the Mediterranean Music Institute (MMI), Elif Çakmut Sanchez ’17, a Turkish oboist and singer, and Nağme Yarkin, a composer and classical Istanbul kemençe player, will bring a modern vision to traditional Turkish music and perform original compositions.

Çakmut Sanchez’s music has a unique sound, blending classical and jazz training into the melodic traditions of the East. She has performed with artists such as David Liebman, Terence Blanchard, Antonio Serrano, Dream Theater, and Aynur Doğan. At Berklee College of Music, Çakmut Sanchez focused on performing and composing Mediterranean and Middle Eastern music. She received the prestigious Bill Pierce award from the Woodwind Department in 2015 and the MMI Student Achievement award in 2016.

Yarkin has performed in many concerts over the years in Turkey and abroad, including the United States, the Netherlands, Tunisia, France, and Belgium. She performed with André Rieu in the André Rieu World Tour concerts, and played on Romina Basso’s most recent album. Yarkin is a member of the Music for Peace Project.

Turkish Modern Traditions features Çakmut Sanchez (vocals, oboe), Yarkin (kemençe), Juliano Vendemiatti (violin), Elena Korableva (cello), and James Heazlewood (bass).
