Kenny Werner, artistic director of the Effortless Mastery Institute (EMI), believes that mastery is available to everyone. An accomplished jazz pianist, he uses his life story and experiences to explore the barriers to creativity and mastery of music. His book, Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within, is one of the most widely read books on music and improvisation, and has helped thousands of musicians around the world unlock their talent and potential.

Join fellow alumni for a lecture around these concepts, as well as a brief performance by Werner.

Note from Werner

“I wrote the book Effortless Mastery in 1995. It was published in 1996. It’s a cliché, but this book seemed to need a vessel to be written. I became that vessel. I guess God has a sense of humor. The book has since traveled all over the world, helping the people who needed it at that very moment. It has changed lives, as I hear over and over again. I am endlessly grateful for having written it.

“How many of our alumni left Berklee, changed careers, and looked back longingly at their instruments for a connection they once had, once cherished? Effortless Mastery is touching the instrument without desire, without attachment, without thought. It allows the musician to become one with their instrument and one with the music.

“EMI is expanding by leaps and bounds. The help we want to provide extends to our alumni. Eventually, we will be able to have workshops and retreats on how to reconnect or revitalize your enthusiasm for your instrument or your composing—maybe even your life.

“Those of you who have read Effortless Mastery and are reading this, I would love to hear from you, especially if the book made a difference in your life.”
