Long heralded by contemporary luminaries such as Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and covered by touchstone artists such as the National and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, Mark Mulcahy refuses to rest on laurels and turn out the same type of album twice.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter returns with his new LP, The Gus, Mulcahy’s sixth solo record. Inspired to “up his lyrical game” while reading a collection of short fiction by George Saunders, The Gus finds the songwriter channeling his eclectic voice and ear for melody into the role of storyteller more than ever before. The result is 10 infectious songs that combine Mulcahy’s unique perspective with stories that absorb listeners more with each spin.

In addition to his celebrated solo career, audiences also may know Mulcahy as the front man of seminal ’80s rock band Miracle Legion or as “Muggy Polaris,” ringleader of Polaris, the fictional house band of the beloved ’90s Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Miracle Legion and Polaris have reunited in recent years to tour, and likely will do so again.

Best known as the lead singer and songwriter behind the acclaimed melancholic folk/pop band Winterpills, Philip B. Price will release Bone Almanac, his first solo outing since 2004, in November. Although it addresses modern dreads such as environmental devastation, Bone Almanac also would sit warmly on a shelf next to John Fahey, Nick Drake, Gene Clark, John Renbourn, and Joni Mitchell.

“I don’t wanna call this my ‘climate change emergency’ album,” Price says, “because I’m pretty sure there will be more of those. Maybe call it volume one.”

Price has collaborated with author Jonathan Lethem, genre-bending Americana musician Walter Salas-Humara (of the Silos), pop purist Cliff Hillis, and has been in two bands with Fountains of Wayne front man Chris Collingwood. He also has coproduced and engineered projects for Frank Black (The Pixies), Spanish for Hitchhiking, Ethan Andrews, and others.
